So, you’ve found your dream gown, but it’s not yet ready. You must enlist the help of an experienced tailor to transform your dream gown into your perfect gown. Many brides require two fittings, but you may require more or less depending on the scale of the alterations.

Although the tailor’s skilled hands will be doing all of the work, there are a few tips you should follow to help your tailor give you the best fit.

  1. Bring all of the lingerie you will be wearing on your big day. This rule is for every fitting you will have. The way your dress fits is dependent upon your undergarments and bringing the wrong lingerie can drastically alter the way your dress hangs on your body. (This rule is also true for the shoes you will be wearing on your wedding day.)
  2. Alert your tailor to any potential changes. Your tailor needs to be able to foresee any bodily changes in order to help you get the best possible fit. This includes if you are on a major diet or about to undergo any plastic surgery to change your physical appearance. If not, you run the risk of discovering that your dress doesn’t fit right when you are about to walk down the aisle. Notifying your tailor of any potential changes early in the fitting will help him or her work around your changing body.
  3. Listen to your tailor. Brides are taught that their wedding is all about what they want. However, if your tailor has reservations about what you want to achieve with your dress you should listen. Your tailor has an intimate knowledge of a fabric’s possibilities and if he or she advises against your wishes, it is best that you listen or at the very least take the advice to heart.
  4. Now that it’s over, move. You will have to stand very still during your appointment, but once your tailor has finished with the fitting, move around. You will not be standing still during your wedding and neither will your dress. Put your hands up, sit down, jump around and run. Think about every possible scenario that you may encounter in your dress and try to recreate it. Your dress may feel great until you start to move so you need to catch any problems before it’s too late.

You will spend a large amount of time thinking about your dream dress, but you shouldn’t have to think about it on your big day. The only way to achieve this is by giving your tailor all of the tools possible to ensure you have a dress that fits. You have the tools now, so go to your fitting and have fun!
