Today I am joined by Rebecca Lau of White Runway, who first took the Australian fashion scene by storm with her online fashion store Gosh Celebrity Fashion and has now entered the bridal realm with White Runway. I must admit that I’m very excited about today’s interview because I’m a huge fan of Gosh Celebrity Fashion and just can’t wait to see where Rebecca will take White Runway!
Q. Tell me a little about yourself? How did you get started in fashion?
I’ve always loved fashion, I live and breathe clothes and literally love shopping til I drop! I started my first online store in 2007 when I saw a gap in the Australian market for stylish, affordable women’s clothing and there weren’t many Australian online stores to shop from. From there I listened to what my customers wanted and found a gap in the market for affordable, stylish bridesmaid dresses that can be worn over again so then White Runway was born!
Q. I love the White Runway online store! What sparked your interest in bridesmaid gowns and setting up White Runway?
Thank you! I found a lot of my customers were purchasing maxi dresses as bridesmaid dresses and with the uncertainty in the economy, most brides and bridesmaids were looking for gowns that wouldn’t break the budget and that the bridesmaids were happy to wear again.
Q. You stock a wide variety of different dresses. What made you stock these particular designs and designers?
I always look at value – I think customers are quite savvy when it comes to purchasing dresses and White Runway prides itself in offering great quality dresses at affordable prices. We don’t put on the huge margins that a lot of stores do as soon as they hear the word ‘bridal’. A lot of the designers we offer have had years of manufacturing for some of Australia’s top designer labels.
Q. What do you love about helping brides choose the perfect bridesmaid dress from your collections?
The best part of my day is when a brides emails me pictures of their bridesmaids in our dresses – I absolutely love that we could help play a hand in making their special day perfect.
Q. How do you keep up with the latest trends?
We always try to incorporate the latest fashion trends into some of the gowns that we offer. Generally a lot of bridesmaid fashion hasn’t’ changed since the 80’s and that’s what we’re trying to change!
Q. What bridal trends do you see in the future?
There will be a lot of lace, sequins and a lot of texture.
Q. What is your number one tip for brides when choosing their bridesmaid dresses?
Make sure that your bridesmaids feel good and look good in their dresses, after all, what comes around goes around and you could be in that horrible frock when it’s their turn to get married!
Q. Do you have any tips on dress shapes, fabric choices or styles for bridesmaids?
The one-shoulder dress is a really good one for most body shapes – it provides enough support for bigger busted figures and it also provides a nice shape for smaller busts. It’s a flattering style that doesn’t’ require pulling up all the time.
Q. Do you have any favourite wedding ideas?
I love bright colours at weddings and I’m starting to really like Ivory dresses for the bridesmaids too!
Q. I’m in love with the Little History Maxi Dress (below) which is just adorably sweet. Do you have a favourite from your current collection?
I have too many favourites but if I was to name a few they would be the Stella Sequined dress, Darling dress and the Felicity dress (below from left to right).
Q. White Runway will be exhibiting at the Sydney Bridal Expo on 21 and 22 April 2012. What can brides expect to see there from White Runway?
All of our dresses and styles on display for you to try, touch and feel. There will also be a special discount offered for orders placed on that weekend.
Q. What are your dreams for White Runway?
I would love for White Runway to be the ultimate only bridal store – a department store online for all things bridal related! I also want to incorporate a gallery where brides can exchange information and pictures of their weddings!
