When it comes to styling your wedding ensemble, hair accessories are a beautiful way to personalise and finish your bridal look. They can be simple and sweet, modern statement pieces or something a little more traditional. It’s a personal choice and they should reflect who you are and what you’re about.
There’s a few things to consider when choosing your hair accessories but the main thing is to have fun. Trust your instincts and let your personal style guide you!
1. The dress comes before the headpiece
There are so many beautiful hair accessories and veils to choose from and it can be easy to fall in love with an accessory before your find your perfect wedding dress. Save yourself the heartbreak and focus on finding your perfect dress first. Choosing accessories after you’ve found your dress is much easier than the reverse!
2. Accentuating the dress
Does your dress feature lots of detailing, a statement bow, long sleeves or a low back? The details on your dress including the neckline and fabric are really important to consider when thinking about how to best accentuate your dress. It’s not essential for your hair piece to match your dress perfectly but it should look balanced and work in harmony with the details and accents on your gown.
3. Your bridal hairstyle
Decide what your hairstyle will be in advance, or if you aren’t sure, think about whether you would prefer your wedding hair all up, all down or somewhere in between. Your hair type is really important too – if you have thin or short hair, thick or extra long hair, this will be useful when deciding on the best attachment such as a headband, clip or comb.
4. Your face shape
Understanding your face shape is really important when finding the perfect piece. Whether your face is heart shaped, round, square or triangular, your face shape will help you decide on the size, shape and placement of your hair accessories.
5. Consider how long you plan to wear the piece
Do you plan on wearing the veil or headpiece all day or just for the ceremony? Many brides choose to wear a long veil for the ceremony and then switch to a headpiece for the reception. This is a great way to take into account the practicalities of the evening – eating, drinking, mingling and dancing. Changing your veil to headpiece for the reception is much cheaper and easier than having a reception dress made.
And a final tip, keep it simple. If you’re not sure what look to go for, play it safe and stay classically simple. Trends come and go and can look dated very quickly. Timeless elegance will never go out of style.
