With Chinese New Year being a few days away, it got me dreaming about a Chinoiserie themed wedding. I love the East meets West stylistic elements that make up the Chinoiserie concept. There’s something so opulent, elegant and ladylike about Chinoiserie, it’s the perfect middle ground for those couples out there who are trying to balance their parent’s traditional Chinese expectations with their desire for a more western affair. I can’t begin to describe how many couples say that their parents want a wedding that reflects Chinese culture but they don’t want to do it for fear of it looking tacky.
Well, rest easy peachies because a Chinoiserie (aka Chinese-esque) wedding may be the remedy for your headaches. More traditionally, you might think red, burgundy and cream colours but what about beautiful light and dark blue with grey or charcoal and touches of emerald green? It’s perfect when matched with those gorgeous Willow patterned ceramic plates which I was so used to seeing when growing up. What’s great about Chinoiserie patterns is that they work really well with complimentary solid colours. Don’t go Chinoiserie crazy with too many patterns though – keep it simple with a few Chinoiserie accents and you’ll achieve a look that is luxurious and graceful. See? You can channel Chinese-esque elements without it being tacky peachies!
